How About We Start: Writing the Life Story We Truly Want

It wasn’t the first time a fresh idea had sparked in my mind, filling me with the energy and excitement that only something new can bring. But, as always, when the initial dopamine-fueled motivation faded, the routines of daily life would slowly overtake my carefully crafted plan, each step buried under the familiar weight of habit.

Yet this time, something felt different. A persistent, nagging voice kept pulling me back—a series of “what ifs” that refused to let the dream go. This time, the idea of doing, of truly beginning, planted itself firmly in my mind.

Our life story is not predetermined or written in stone; rather, it’s an ongoing narrative crafted by the choices we make each and every day. From the moment we wake up until we close our eyes at night, we are the authors of our own stories, wielding the power to shape every plot twist, develop every character, and explore every theme.

So, how about we start checking off the boxes beside our long-written wishes?

When we wake up in the morning, we choose to place our right foot first on the floor. We decide to breathe first and speak second. We choose to articulate what we always wanted to express. We choose to bask in our accomplishments and celebrate simple wins. We decide to establish standards and a timeline for our lives as we see fit. We choose to be truthful with ourselves and those closest to us. We choose to dance when it feels right and to rest when challenges feel overwhelming.

JOURNALINGEXAMPLE

We choose to open our hearts and leap, trusting that somehow, somewhere, someone will be there to catch us—to understand us, accept us, and love us.

If the starting point of your lifelong journey offered a view of every stop; all the small victories, impossible challenges, daunting obstacles, and all the significant accomplishments ahead, How much easier would it be to cross that intimidating line before you? How much more confidently could you sprint forward, emerging on the other side as the person you’ve always aspired to be?

How much more uncomplicated would be to just start?

Change doesn’t occur if you’re standing still, fixated on the starting line, trembling about all the possible ways this can play out. No matter how many breaths you take or encouraging words you hear, the dread still lingers.

Some choices may lead to moments of triumph and joy, while others may cast a shadow of challenge, veiling our vision in darkness. Yet, I’ve come to realize that I’d rather embrace the journey, even amidst uncertainty, than remain stagnant, fixated on the starting line and yearning for the finish.

So how about I choose to pursue what I’ve always loved?

I choose to weave words together, creating a personal gallery of thoughts, emotions and experiences. I choose to share it with the world, with you.

But above all, I choose myself and my heart. I choose to follow its pull.

JOURNALING PROMPTS

  1. Imagine your ideal future self and the story they tell. What choices can you make today to align your current actions with that vision?
  2. Consider a goal or dream you’ve been hesitant to pursue. What fears are holding you back? How can you overcome them?
  3. If you could choose one dream to follow, which would it be and why? What are the first 10 steps you can take in the following days, or months to realise it?
